Friday night live at Transistor: Tandem Shop Records' Five-Year Anniversary Show withThe Oarsman, Kevin Rieg of Many Places and Project Film. Sound by Jon Monteverde.

The Oarsman is the acoustic project of Marcus Christopher Maloney, formerly of Honest Engines and Many Places. Maloney wrote and recorded The Oarsman's first EP, 'Easel,' on an iPhone during a post-breakup road trip, and it was the first time he ever used his singing voice. After stops at Daytrotter and WBEZ's 'The Morning Shift,' Maloney recorded an LP at his home studio; it's called 'Ethnomusikology.' The songs are honest and sad, the vocals sweet and pure, and the guitar playing musical. The Oarsman's debut full-length, 'Writing House,' will be released 9/24 on Tandem Shop. For this set Marcus was joined by The Oarsman's electric guitarist Jerry Jaskowiak and bassist Justin Casas.

Kevin Rieg is the singer/ songwriter/guitar player of Chicago band Many Places. Their debut album 'Another Oath' -- released by Tandem Shop Records last May and written, recorded and produced by Rieg -- is about renewal and repetition, two competing concepts at odds through the record. 'Another Oath' takes its musical cues from Simon & Garfunkel and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and is a lovely debut from a new artist sure to make waves. For this set Kevin was joined by Many Places' bassist Nick Godden.

Project Film is the precocious and awkward duo of long-time friends Sam McAllister and Megan Frestedt. Their first record, 'Chicago,' was released in 2010 and they just finished recording the follow-up. They make indie pop music with lots of guitars and lots of synths.
