Friday night live at Transistor: acoustic alt-folk from Elizabeth Bagby and progressive/alternative rock from The Elizabeth Dane. Sound by Jon Monteverde.

Liz Bagby grew up in a border town in New Mexico, and after brief stints in St. Louis and on the East Coast moved to Chicago for its vibrant theater scene. She performs both as an actor and as a musician. She has composed music for numerous productions; favorites include Shakespeare’s “King Phycus” with Strange Tree and “The Ballad of the Sad Cafe” with Signal Ensemble Theatre. Her writing has been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies; Press 53 published her novel “The Crazy Garden,” and Adirondack Plays will soon print her farce “Quartet and Fugue.” Last year she took part in the Arts & Sciences Expedition to the Arctic Circle, a three-week residency aboard a tall-mast ship.

For this Transistor set, Liz played acoustic versions of songs from “Everything I Think I Know Is Wrong,” and more.

The Elizabeth Dane is a Chicago rock band comprised of McKenzie Gerber (rhythm guitar, vocals), Dan Caffrey (bass guitar, vocals), Jon Patrick Penick (lead guitar, vocals), and Maxwell Shutls (drums, production).

McKenzie Gerber had written a couple of solo tunes he wanted to fully realize, asking former bandmate Dan Caffrey (Library Ghost) and longtime friend Jon Patrick Penick to fill in bass guitar and lead respectively. The chemistry was too good to ignore. Soon they sought to enlist drummer and friend Maxwell Shults, who would not only complete the quartet but help them produce their first album, “Into the Thinny,” which you can find here. They are currently working on their second record.

For their performance at Transistor, The Dane played a stripped-down mix of their current album with some new songs, and a couple of covers in spirit of the Halloween season.
